Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light is a science fantasy franchise that includes a short-lived Hasbro toyline of action figures and vehicles, plus a 13-episode animated series from Sunbow Productions that aired in 1987. A bimonthly Star Comics series ran six issues from November 1987 to September 1988. This was Sunbow’s first Hasbro property made without Marvel Productions, with Japanese studio Tokyo Movie Shinsha handling overseas animation. In 2018, IDW Publishing released a five-issue crossover miniseries pairing the Visionaries with the Transformers.
The story takes place on the fictional planet Prysmos, where advanced technology and machinery suddenly stop working after the planet’s three suns align, emitting radiation that acts like an electromagnetic pulse. Citizens must rely on ancient magic to survive. The titular Visionaries are knights split into two factions: the heroic Spectral Knights and the evil Darkling Lords. Those seeking magic are invited by the wizard Merklynn to a competition. Survivors who navigate traps, dangerous creatures, and battles are rewarded with animal totems attached to their chestplates, which reflect their attributes and let them transform into those creatures.
Some knights receive enchanted staves activated by reciting verses; in the cartoon, these staves could be used only once before needing recharging, but in the comic they had unlimited use. Characters without staves could instead infuse vehicles with magic, though those spells appeared only on toy packaging, not in the comics or series. In the Star Comics run, female characters got shields that worked like the male characters’ power staves.
The Spectral Knights, led by Leoric, use magic for good and are the protagonists. The Darkling Lords, led by Darkstorm, use magic selfishly and are the antagonists.
Other characters include Merklynn (voiced by Roscoe Lee Browne), a wizard living in a shrine inside Iron Mountain. He invites knights to compete in an obstacle race to his shrine, granting magic to those who reach his hall. He also recharges power staves in exchange for quests, sometimes offering magical devices that often cause trouble.
